I think the difference is in the spelling!

My sister-in-law calls mine the laboratory! I sew, do crafts, quilt, make soap, and before I had a dedicated area for it, made wine in it. When we built the house we combined two rooms, one end is the washer and dryer, and the 'hazmat' sink. The rest of the room is my treasures. When we combined the two rooms our builder was not all that happy, but my husband explained that this was MY 'pole barn'

LOL) Actually, he is a sweetheart...he enclosed our entire three car garage for me and it is one awesome room definitely deserving of the name studio.

GagaSmith: I refer to my longarm as my Corvette. My husband likes (and collects) C-3 Corvettes.
Following along with this I guess I should call mine my tractor.

To me "sewing room" sounds homey/country/part of the family/warm... "studio" sounds fancy/city/separate/cold... I just call mine the dining room.

I call it my sewing room but my husband calls it "Lala Land" because I go in there and forget time, meals, etc. LOL He even made a sign for the door that reads Lala Land with quilting picture in background.

I took all bedroom furniture out of the rooms I use for sewing. I have some roll a way beds I use if needed to be set up anywhere but in my sewing rooms. No one sleeps in my sewing rooms. That would make me feel like my room could be invaded when needed, I won't allow anyone to think after all it's just room I use for sewing when it's not needed for something else.

I think that if you create items to sell or display, then your work space is a studio. If you create just for your own pleasure, the quilts, dolls, etc. then come from your sewing room.

Unfortunately, I am crammed into one room, bedroom, office, sewing room. We are working on the basement and I will move down there with more room. Bedroom on one side and sewing room on the other, office somewhere in the middle cannot wait! I do have space over the garage, debating in future to make apartment or my studio! Depends if I need to supplement my income or not. Anyway need to dream and hopefully someday will have a studio!

Studio, to me, implies a room...rather than a corner of a room.
I just have a small corner in the laundry room. Guess it's not a studio. Sigh.

It's not a dumb question. I am thinking of that old commercial and the hillbilly at the table asks for 'jelly'. The other people at the table gasp ! It is called 'all fruit', not jelly. My DH and I bought a house on the Illinois River recently and most people call them 'cabins', and I call mine a cottage. It's a house but I prefer cottage. What you name your sewing room is your choice. You can say I am going in to see Ethyl now. You can call it anything you want.
