sounds like you already found the cheap stuff. I always buy the upper end thread. my machine doesn't like the cheap stuff and it leaves to much lint in my machine.

If you do find lint in your machine - and I think we have discussed this before - one good way to remove it is with a pipe cleaner. I run it through my disks and double over one end and run it through the sewing bobbin area. Works great!

I often spray my cheaper spools of thread with silicon, that I get at wally-world in the automitive dept. I really helps.

My machine won't even use cheap thread. Dollar spools are at the dollar store. I love the thread from Connecting Thraeds. Best value in my opinion.

I use Connecting threads essentials a lot, also Marathon you can do a search for the Marathon Thread. I don't have the address handy. I use the Marathon for thread painting.

best thread I have found is Connecting Threads. Love to work with it. Can't imagine getting thread for $1 a spool. Is that a typo?

Please don't skimp on quality when buying thread! Instead, try using thread that comes in cones and use coupons, like for Joanne Fabrics, and you'll save money. But to put time and energy into a project with cheap thread that's poor quality ... it's not a good thing! Maxi Lock comes in cones and is quite reasonable. Polyester thread is just as good as cotton.
