I'm a washer unless it is going to be a wall hanging and never see water. It was the way I was taught and I like the end result better...but it's only an opinion :~)

I had an issue with one fabric..that is horrible and after the quilt was sewed together..it is fraying away from the seams. Just the one fabric. What a job to fix my mother-in-laws quilt...more work then to just start over.

I've wondered about what temperature water is recommended for the washing and also which cycle is preferable?

I wash absolutely every scrap of fabric that comes into the house whether I am going to use it right away or add it to stash. I use hot water and color catchers, and dry on a hot setting. That way, any problems are evident before I have spent time and effort working with it.

I wash before to make sure any dye that wants to fade out - can - that way I have a better feeling about making the entire quilt

I do not prewash material. I wash the quilt once it is done.

Cold, Extra gentle, large load water level, agitate gently then soak about 10 minutes, then continue cycle or if possible front loader

I pre-wash. I don't want any suprises of shrinking or colors running. I want to know what I'm going to end up with after all the work that goes into it.
