I see that your project inspired the same feelings in several of us. How about a tutorial in how to do that? Your piece is so wonderful!! I love it. I would like to do one of my DGD's. I would imagine once we knew the technique we could do it of anyone. Right?

Thank you everyone! I would love to see your portrait progress if you decide to try this challenge! It really is a fun process. I laughed out loud doing mine.

I started with a 16" x 20" piece of fabric and fused the pieces to that. To get my mug the correct size, I blew the photo up and printed it in two pieces and taped the pieces together.

You could use fabric paints, colored pens, felt, beads, embroidery, etc. to embellish. I plan on attempting some thread painting details with my free motion foot to secure the applique pieces. I think I'll sandwich it first so those stitches will help quilt the piece.
