Now that You have taught me 85% of what i know about quilting. I am getting 5 or 6 other people who are interesting at the Salvation Army. Our 1st meeting is May 19th. Would you give me some hints for this meeting. anything, anything to get started.

Wow, have fun! that is awesome, also you might post a note on the offline section here on the board as you might find some quilting board members that would love to join you

1. have a check off list on things they need to bring so they won't forget anything

have fun!

are you sewing together? my friend and I started a small group. We didn't sew together for about 6 months. Now we do a monthly potluck/sew together. I think for a 1st meeting a show and tell would be nice. See where everyone else is skills wise. have fun!

I have made a list. I also have listed this site for them to visit. I do not think any of these ladies have ever did any quilting. their interest peak when they saw some of the blocks I did. We will meet once a week. I think I'll be starting them from zero. Learning the machines (the Army is providing) demo tools needed,. What else should be covered?

if they have not sewn alot or are new to the machines, how about a string quilt to get started? Its very forgiving, uses scraps and they look great no matter what fabric you start with. A demo of using a rotary cutter and mat (safety etc). How to pick a good fabric (hand, weave, etc). maybe even a demo on hand techniques. May not want to use them, but there has been at least one hand quilter in each group I have joined.

Let them practice on sheets of notebook paper, practicing staying on the line while they get use to controlling speed, starting, stopping. Then draw large gradual S shapes and swirling, circular patterns on the paper and let them practice sewing them. We always did this in 4-H with the new girls and boys so they could get comfortable with the machine before they do anything with fabric. Learn one thing at a time.

I wish I lived in pgh,pa! That would be so fun. Yes, do post in the offline meet-ups. Who knows? You might find enough women here to come hang out with your group that you could teach the new quilters one-on-one! Have fun,.
