I'd vote for the 301!

From a purely monetary standpoint, the Jem is a better deal for $100 if it is originally an $800 machine. I can get a 301 in good condition with case for about $300, so $100 is a great deal on that machine also.

If you can use another stay-at-home machine (say, for a backup machine), I would get both as they are both unusually great deals!

The Gem is great for quilting...needle up or down, needle moves to side for scant quarter, and other great assets. I have one and love it. The 301 is nice for straight stitching and a great vintage machine to own; so best thing would be buy both lol...still cheaper than one new one lol.

I have a Jem Gold and found a rolling suitcase that it fit in at Wal-Mart for $10, the case was tall for the machine so I found a wire shelf that it can sit on and I have storeage space underneath.

I have a 301 and really like it.....a lot. It's the one that stays up and threaded all the time. I had a Janome Jem Platinum and traded it in for a Janome 3160 QDC. I found the machine just wasn't robust enough for the types of sewing I do. I hate when I'm sewing over seams and the machine makes that horrid "mashing gears" noise. My 301 has never done that.

It all depends on the type of sewing you want to do. If zigzag and extra stitches are necessary to you, then it will have to be the Janome. It's a good machine, don't get me wrong. It just didn't suit my types of sewing. Strictly for quilt class and sewing light to medium fabrics, it's a steal at $100.00.

I still prefer my 301 over the Jem, but really quite like my 3160 QDC and it came with more options than the Jem.....

We sure are lucky to have all these choices!

I have both. Love the Janome and my FW. Cant you somehow get both? If I had to pick which one for classes it would be the Janome. More options.
