I stumbled upon this video today. Has anyone here done this? I do have trouble seeing where I'm going when free motion quilting, I just thought it was one of those learning curve things. After watching more of her videos, her foot doesnt seem to jump around like mine.

I have seen this and since I accidently broke my metal bar off I thought I would try it. No matter how many times I wrap the binder around to push the spring down.... it still sits too tightly on my quilt. I hope someone else has had luck and if there is a trick to it I sure would like to know it !!!! :?

Depends on the brand of machine & type of foot. I have a spring loaded hopping foot, which bounces a bit and a darning foot which doesn't. I guess before modifying your foot, I'd see if a darning foot is available for your machine. I had a choice between an open and closed toe versions, and didn't need to perform surgery.

I modified my foot. It was a generic darning/fmq foot...looks exactly like what she is showing. But, I only opened the foot and have not tried bending the bar & using the rubber band. The foot hopping doesn't seem to bother me. I could not find an open toed foot for my fmq to fit my machine. I had this extra foot & decided to open it. It works much better for me, because I'm able to see more of the line of stitches as I travel on the quilt.

I would like to try it but I'm afraid to break the foot.

My Babylock came with a darning foot but it is closed which makes it difficult when trying to FMQ. I bought an open foot on Ebay and the same day it came I watched this video. Not being good with any tool I am still glad I bought the open foot.

I have a Pfaff and had a friend cut out and then smooth that part of my FMQ foot/embroidery foot years ago. One local embroidery teacher really got upset and said hasn't so far and I know of others who have since done the same thing without problems.

This is not a hopping foot ... that is what is on a midarm or LA machine.

Yep I did it and I'm glad I did. I can see so much better. I encourage any of you that haven't and have trouble seeing where your going to do this and turn off the light on you machine that helps also. Covered my light with tape it helps to cast shadows so you can see where you've been. Thank you to all that helped me make my decision.
