Is it matching the points that you are having problems?
I learned this trick years ago on Eleanor Burns or Fons and Porter (can't remember which). I put a pin straight down exactly on the point (or corner) of both pieces. This holds them together. Then when sewing just ease in any difference in the two pieces between the pins. They always come out perfect.

I've had the same problem and my teacher said to look at each block individually and then pin several times (1/4" from edge) once you matched the seams. Each block sometimes has different seams so you really have to look at each one and not just sew blocks together....at least that's what I was doing.

I am trying that method. The star points are gut from diagonal strips so there are lots of points to match. I am having a little more luck by opening the seams and ironing flat. still a lot of work. I am basting them first since i have to take them out several times.
