I am looking at a quilt, New Beginnings, that is all HSTs to make a large star. The pattern calls for cutting the strips 3 3/8". As long as there are no other pieces in the quilt, can I cut them 3 1/2"? That way, I can use my June Tailor Shape Cut ruler, which is faster and more accurate for me. The quilt will be a little larger, but I can't see where it would make any other difference.

I agree. Should not matter if you want your quilt larger.

I haven't seen the pattern, but if they are all the same size hst, I would definitely change them to an easier size to cut.

You may have to adjust borders but other than that, I would go for it if it is easier for you :D:D:D

I'd never precut my borders. My 1/4" seam is getting better, but I am still in the learning mode in quilting. Ask me about apparel sewing. I can answer that. Okay, so if I chose this pattern for the next birthday quilt of one one of my four daughters, the 3 1/2" it is. Yay, I can use the Shape Cut. Thank you. Now to find enough tan, brown and rust batiks in my stash. I bet I only have to purchase the cream background fabric.

If you are making HST out of the strips, my best guess is that regarless if they are 3 3/8 or 3.5", you will be sewing two together and squaring up the finished unit to 3". So I do not think that the size of the border will be affected.

I make alot of HST's, and always cut up to the next 1/8 inch. (The measurements for HST's are either at 3/8 or 7/8, which means to me, 1/2 or next full inch)

I agree with Jenny. the quilt has a lot of HST which you can always trim back to the correct size after they are made. I go up the 1/8" also but then trim back after finishing. Good LUck
