I have been looking for an old Singer to purchase so I can take it apart and practice cleaning it before I tackle one of mine. I went to a local Goodwill and the "junk man" was there. He was taking an old Singer out the back door. I asked him why and he said the manager said he could take it for scrap. Yes, he was taking this old black Singer to be sold for scrap and he said it would probably be crushed. I asked if I could buy it and he said no, he needed the scrap. I almost cried. He did give me the book, feet, bobbins, bobbin case, needles, and everything in the drawers but I just wanted to save the machine. It was a Singer 15-91. I then asked the manager if she would save one for me and explained the reason I wanted one and she said sure. Another Singer bites the dust.

it to bad that he would not sell it to you I'm sure you offer him more money then that machine will make him a scrap prices. some people have tunnel vision.

Wow. It's so hard to see that so many people value these old, vintage machines as junk more than collectors items or to use! But, Americans especially are so into the have to have the "newest and brightest". I've got so many gals interested in my machines at guild now. They do notice my vintage machines. Yes, I've got a new, fancy Bernina 830 but I only travel with my trusty vintage machines. I tell the women at the guild over and over, it's getting a new machine is not going to give you instant talent. A good quilter will be just as good with a old machine. It's so sad to see these gems getting tossed away!

Yes it's sad to see old things destroyed, but in a way, I take comfort for the ones I have managed to save, and every time another one goes, mine go up a tiny bit in value.

What kind of shape was that machine in? I'd get in touch with the National Goodwill and report the store....you see these machines on their auction site all the time, and there are those of us that would pay good money to have them....why give them away for scrap????????

Unfortunately, these places get more for scrap iron than they get from people who want these old machines to sew with. There aren't enough of us who love these "old gals" around. :(
