Is he on Valtrex? Contrary to belief, it does help even if started more than three days after an outbreak. L-lysine is a natural help - an amino acid, I think. It's available almost anywhere vitamins are sold. 1500 mg a day during an attack and 500 mg a day forever to keep the shingles at bay. You never get rid of them. He has my sympathy.

That's just aweful. I have not heard of anything that will help. I feel so sorry for him.

He should see a doctor & get antibiotics. Shingles can be very serious.

he needs to see his doctor asap to get prescription meds that will help it..I had this a few years ago (miserable)....I would recommend the "anti Shingles" vaccine that is now avaiable...anyone who has ever had chickenpox is highly likely to get shingles someday, if they havent already...it takes your doctors prescription to get the "shingles shot" and you have to do it at the drugstore ... right now, its on back order, but there should be some available again in a couple of months (so the pharmacist told me)..you can take your prescription in to the druggist and he will put it on order for you.

I had shingles a few years ago. They put me on Valtrex and a steroid. Medrol dose pack, and I didn't have all the trouble that you hear about. He should go to the doctor if he hasn't already. The meds really help. I still had the red line and some blisters, but they didn't hurt like crazy. I wish him luck, and take care of himself. The reddness lasted quite awhile as I remember.

DD had shingles that broke out above her temple. She gets an outbreak when she gets too stressed. She gets a nerve blocker shot for that area. It's the only thing that works for her. I'm surprised the Dr. didn't suggest the shot for him if he can take it.

The most current info on this condition is that everyone over fifty get this vaccine and it will pretty much protect you from ever getting this awful and painful condition. My sympathys to your friend and hope for a quick recovery.
peace

I just got over my second case. This time got Valtrex early and seemed to shorten the time.

Other than meds, trying to relax and doing something that will take his mind off his pain (quilting!).
