Wow 35 pages so far on this thread read them all. What a great idea. I love flowers so I'm thinking about an applique quilt with flowers on it. Since you never know when your numbers up guess I better get started!

I have several quilting friends that have made their casket cover. I Think it is a very smart idea. Hope I don't die too soon because I haven't made mine yet. My hubby hates it when I talk about things like that, but it's going to happen one day. That's just a fact of life.

I have seen this done and I really like the idea. When my mom passed away someone sent and knitted afghan to the funeral for us to take home after. It was really special.

When my grandmother passed, they tucked one of her quilts into the casket with her, and another one that my aunts made (that showed my grandma's life story) hung behind it during the service. I thought it was beautiful and appropriate, and this was before I was "into" quilting.

Personally I strongly dislike flowers as an expression of grief over a death. When my dad died suddenly people sent me all kinds of flowers, which was a very sweet sentiment, except that I was too depressed to really appreciate them and then as they all died and wilted it just added to my sadness. Seemed way to symbolic of HIS death and just reminded me that I'd lost him so suddenly, and I felt ungrateful and wasteful throwing them all away. I would much rather have had people plant a tree in his memory instead, or donate money to a local park or other charity in his name...something like that.

At least nobody gave me a live plant...I have the blackest thumb ever and can kill a plant just by looking at the poor thing!

My sister was an avid quilter and made an unbelievably beautiful quilt. She was dying of cancer. It was 2003. She wanted it draped over her casket. It was beautiful. It showed her talent and the beauty that she made. I want the same on my casket. I guess I better tell my husband. Kind of gives me the creeps talking about doing it for my funeral. Hope it's still 30 years away.

I do not what to be laid out, I don't want a funeral, and I want cremated, so not need for a quilt.
I want visitors when I.m alive and flowers would be nice once in awhile, so I can enjoy it when alive.

I did go to a viewing and there was a large basket filled with rolled up quilts, that was sitting by the coffin and I thought that was a clever idea.

I made my mom a memory quilt for her birthday this past April. She is now in hospice care and the quilt is hanging in her room. Would it be wrong to put it on her casket for her funeral but not bury it with her? I would like to keep the quilt. Or should I just have it displayed at her funeral?
