I'm new to quilting, and I'm wondering what types of thread people recommend for machine piecing and quilting. Also, what colors would you recommend starting out with? Thanks for the suggestions.

I use white, cream, gray. You might want to try a few brands and see what you like best. I like Mettler, Connecting threads and have used Coats and Clark for years. Like many things in quilting it is a personal choice

I generally use Coats and Clark Dual Duty XP without any problems. I tend to use white when I am piecing and will use a dark color if the fabrics are dark. I FMQ with just about any color that tickles my fancy and the fabric tells me it will play nicely with.

I use light grey for almost everything as it tends to blend in. Have used Mettler for years and years but recently purchased a spool of Aurifil to try. I purchased a spool of Presencia at the last quilt show I attended to try as it is definitely less expensive.

I like Star cotton thread by Coats & Clark, but it is difficult to find. I do not see a problem with using threads you might have from general sewing, particularly starting out and if you have a lot. The important thing about any of the threads you use for piecing is that they are strong, not breaking, etc. Do not use rayon. I do use the large spools of serger thread and I do use a lot of beige threads.
