My BIL called me last night and asked me to make him something out of the ordinary. He and my sister are planning a trip to visit their grandson and wanted to take him a couple of hunting rifles. He didn't have cases for them so he asked me to make him some quilted holsters (scalperts) so they would not become scarred or the sights get messed up. Has anyone here ever made anything like that? I have some things that I used to practice making feathers on when I got my new long arm. I thought I'd just make him some gun sacks out of those. Anybody here got any ideas?

Use what you have on hand. As long as it is quilted it should be OK. Hugs

Do you mean scabbards? Well take those practice pieces you have and cut them out and make a tie on the one end and enclose the smaller end for the gun and then he can tie it and it is done, wouldn't take long and would be nice for the guns. Like a sack for them and ties on the end, if that is clear as mud. The batting would protect from bumps and bruises. If you want to use new fabric, put that over the practice pieces and quilt again and then cut out and sew.

I would have him measure or go to an outdoors store to get the right measurements for the rifles. don't want them too small.

If you have practice pieces big enough, you could make long skinny bags with a drawstrings at the top. Kind of like a long tube that he can slip the gun into and tie the end shut.

Before you make one, go to a sporting goods store, look at the gun "holders" or scabbards. You will find them in all kinds of fabrics. The ones I personally like are quite firm on the sides with lots & lots of padding, so the scope doesn't get bumped & get out of whack. (I think that is a technical term) lol. Also the most popular ones have a very l o n g zipper on the seam side. Very useful for getting the gun out of the case.
I have been an avid hunter for about 20 yrs. now, & to be honest, I've never thought to make my own gun case. Hum, maybe something in the fruit ladies line? Or some of the "hunk" fabric? Something a little more feminine?

I'd go look at them at a Sporting good store. What I've seen has a lot of padding. Have no idea how much they cost. Since it's for a boy/young man, I'd be inclined to buy one already made.

I think you're in for some studying to understand how the gun fits and why padding in which area.

The ones my husband has are stiff, like soft sided luggage and heavily padded. His also have a zipper that goes around 3 sides. However, if they are traveling by car, they may just want something a step up from wrapping them in a blanket so the long tube suggestions would work just fine (maybe 2 layers of practice quilt). I'd call him back and get more info on what he's thinking.

Definitely call him and find out if he only needs them for transport or if he intends for them to be used after the rifles arrive at the Grandson's. To be honest about it he could pick up a couple inexpensive ones at Walmart for less than 20.00 each that would protect the guns for transport and storage.

FRIST thing make sure the fabric can beath the gun must get air or it can rusted. Rust and gun together are not a good thing. I have found that fannel work bested. not knowing the size of the gun If you make a tube about 5 ft. 8 ins wide about any gun will fit in it. I put a handle about 2/3 of the way to the top and put strip over one side of the bag about 6 to 8 ins from that top this way they can fold the top down to the size of the gun and tuck the fold in to the size of the gun.
