Try it on lots of projects, art quilts, lap quilts, table toppers, pillows and enjoy the process!

My favorite wool batted, big stitch hand quilted quilt is a traditional block done in florals and neutral background. It's soft and pretty, not country at all, in my opinion. I use it on all sorts of patterns because the big stitch is easier on my arthritic, nerve-damaged hands. I can feel the needle because it's larger and the larger stitch makes the whole job go a bit faster.

Thanks Jan for the info. I can't FMQ or LA due to arthritis in my shoulders, I have been wanting to try hand quilting but was worried about arthritis in my hands and wrists. This makes me feel better about using this stitch in different style quilts and makes me less worried about my hands holding up.

I too like the look of the big stitch. I do a lot of big stitch on a variety of quilt type projects. I'm now doing a pre-printed whole cloth quilt in navy blue perle cotton. While it's a "big" stitch, I vary the length of the "big" stitch to be proportional to the type of quilt I'm doing. I've used a smaller stitch with perle cotton on a miniature quilt and came out lovely. As far as needles, I've used the Clover Sashiko needle, DMC Embroidery 1-5 needles. I've done a lot of Sashiko- preprinted navy patterns with a Sashiko white thread. Much easier on the hands, etc. and a lovely look.
I will try the sashiko needles, that is what this stitch reminds me of. I have a wall hanging kit with sashiko stitching on it so that may be my first project. It has been waiting for me for a couple of years at least.

Great use of the perle cotton. Your stitches are so nice and even. What a nice project to pick up and work on in the evening.

Gale it's gorgeous! My first quilt was a whole cloth and I love hand work. I agree the 'big stitch' adds so much charm to some quilts and I can not do it. What size needle are you using, any tips??
