Hello, friends - I am back with the second quilt I was interested in learning more about - with your help! This quilt may or may not have been finished by my mom or her mom (Grandma Ann!) in the 1980's. However, I ended up with it and will have to chat with mom soon to get some more "history" on these quilts.
First thing: what would this pattern/style be called? And what details are evident to you in the know? If you read my other few posts, I am a new guy in the hobby (50+) with a new Bernina 350 that my wife got for my birthday.

I'd in particular like to know about the stitching - it seems the quilting is by hand, and maybe the piecing - the finished edging (OK or what ever you call that!!) looks like done by machine, not that it really matters at all to me. I think this was also from my grandma in Iowa (Floyd County) but may have been finished by my mom after 1992-1994.

yes, the binding was a decorative machine stitch. i know i've seen that block design in more recent fabric lines but can't think of the name of the block at time time.

I believe the quilt was hand stitched. I cannot see the stitching on the binding to make a guess. I will be following the post to see what others say about the fabrics and am looking forward to seeing what your mom says.

The quilt is hand-stitched, the binding is newer and machine stitched; also doesn't match the rest of the quilt.

It looks to be hand quilted. Very pretty quilt!

Just a guess, but I would put most of the fabrics in the 1960's. However, lots of scrappy quilts like yours were made from different fabrics in someone's scrap bag or stash, meaning they could come from several different decades.

If you can't tell if the piecing was by machine or by hand, you may have to open up a seam and look.

Let us know what your mom says about the age.

Gently pull at the seams to separate the pieces, not pull apart completely just enough to see the stitches. If the stitches look small and even, chances are they were machine sewed. If they are a little looser and uneven, they were hand pieced. Any experienced quilter could tell this for you. Just visit a fabric shop.

Yes it does look hand quilted. The binding was machine stitched with a decorative scalloped design. Pretty quilt!!
