Default How did you quilt your jelly roll quilt?

Since I have not learned FMQ, I will probably stitch in the ditch, but not every 2" strip. That would probably make the quilt stiffer than I like. Thought of doing a wavy line down the middle of each strip, but same problem - variegated thread for that. How have you done yours? All I can think of right now is to SID every third or fourth strip.....would no quilting vertically pose a problem? THX in advance!

I agree with QuiltnNan.....but reverse direction at the end of each diagonal quilting so you don't risk pulling the quilt out of "square."

Straight stitch quilting - like you do with SID - doesn't *have* to be "hidden" in a ditch; if fact, I personally prefer never to SID quilt. If I'm going to do all that work I want the world to see it!!
AND it doesn't have to be a diagonal design, it could be vertical or horizontal lines, too.

It'll look great!

On mine I just did a wavy line down the middle of each strip. Not too dense and seems to be holding up well.

I did use high loft batting because that's my favorite.

If you only do a line of quilting stitches every 3 or 4 rows, that will be 6-8" spacing between stitching. Make sure the batting you are using allows for that much spacing. Many battings have a minimum distance of only 3-4 inches apart, in which case you would need to quilt at least every other row. Otherwise you should be fine!

I used the serpentine stitch on my machine, and stitched down the middle of each strip.

I just finished one and did the serpentine stitch down each seam and I also stitched each in the opposite direction. It went together quickly and looks good! Last year I made Christmas ones for my 2 sisters and this one was of Halloween fabric and went to my brother and SIL. SIL was thrilled and threatened not to share
Here it is before I quilted it. I goofed and didn't do the 45 angle on the ends but the size is still great for a lap/sofa quilt
