Cool Minky ? How to sew it?

I've always wanted to try using Minky as a backing for a quilt. It is so soft and cuddly. My daughter bought some and I've been working with it a bit. The nicest thing I can say about it - it's like trying to get a big cage full of monkeys to all sit still at once.

Would love any and all tips and advice on sewing with Minky.

Thanks.

I spray baste the minkey to the top...don't use batting. I make the quilting lines just close enough to hold it together. It makes a nice, soft ,nicely draped blanket.

I do use batting with minkie it seems to hold it in place better. Smooth the minkie, place the batting. Smooth the top over the batting. Baste well. Use batting ( like warm & natural) that allows a lot of space between quilting lines, lengthen your stitch. Put in a good sharp new needle and quilt, being careful to not stretch it as you stitch.

I've done a couple of Minky-backed quilts and I totally agree with your analogy! I ended up hand basting the edge that stretched and curled so badly. I did use a lightweight batting. I think glue basting the edges would help, also. They are worth the frustration. The recipients love them!

I use minky all the time, I have used it with and without batting. I quilt with it on the LA and have also quilted with it on the domestic machine. I do not find it that hard to work with.

I agree, the spray baste holds the minkee so it won't stretch while you "quilt" the two layers together! Works like a charm. Also a little longer stitch length!!!

I too would love to know any tricks. I know you CAN'T iron it so that leaves out using any fusible interfacing. I made two small pillows and it was like being with 2 dozen misbehaving toddlers !!! I would thing that if you did FMQ on a DSM that I would need to have the Minky side up.

The last quilt I made was flannel and cotton on top, filled with bamboo wadding and backed with cuddle soft which is I think very similar to minky? I basted both sides to the wadding with 505 and just quilted it normally. It's made a quilt that's super warm, very snugly and quite stroke-able
