do you go to the beachand have a BBQ? Is there are special symbol. E.g. Heart, daffodil, shamrock etc.

Traditional here to have a BBQ on the Beach or celebrate with friends and family. Up here we are sweltering in the heat but getting a lot of tropical storms-mainly at night with lightning, thunderstorms and rain but hot days. Australia Day here the local councils put on celebrations, entertainment and BBQ's on the Beach. Basically it is a fun day for all. Nationally awards are presented for Australian of the Year, Young Person of the Year etc. The local councils also have their own community Awards as well along with Citizenship Ceremonies Lots of Australian flags flying everywhere. As I am also from New Zealand they celebrate New Zealand Day on February 6th , but often the local Kiwi community will also put on something so I can get to celebrate twice.

We always celebrate Australia Day, we hang out our flag, get together with friends and have a BBQ in the backyard with a glass of Australian wine or a glass or two of Aussie beer, and toast the wonderfull country we live in and appreciate in this troubled world how lucky we all are.

Thanks for telling us how you celebrate. I love hearing about other cultures and their celebrations.
Do you have anything special you do, like give gifts or something, or is it like our independence day,
with parades and bbq's. Happy Australia Day.

No we don't give gifts on Australia Day, there are lots of parades and our Prime Minister announces who is "Australian of the Year", "Young Australiian of the Year", "Senior Australian of the Year", last year 2015 Australian of the year was a lady Rosie Battey, she is a great campaigner against domestic violence, her only son Luke was stabbed to death by his father at a cricket match in front of Rosie, she suffered many years of abuse by Luke's father. Rosie was and still is a great ambassador in highlighting and fighting against domestic violence. Our 2016 Australian of the year is David Morrison a soldier who has fought tirelessly against bullying in our armed forces.
