Default Please help with ideas

I recently purchased this panel to make a quilt for my daughter's friend who wants a Bambi and camo theme for her baby to be born later this year.

http://www.joann.com/nursery-fabric-...panels&start=8

It is so pale and colorless. I plan to cut it up and just use the center deer, adding blocks and borders. My issue is with the deer itself. How do you think I could add color to it? I thought about fabric paint or fabric markers but have never used either of them.
It's not easy finding Bambi themed fabric. I found a couple on ebay but wasn't really impressed.
I would greatly appreciate any ideas.
Thanks.

Perhaps applique the whole deer! Maybe add some outline(legs) with embroidery stitches. I did a 'deer head' from a stained glass pattern, came out good! I say applique!

You can color with regular crayons and the iron the fabric to set the color. http://www.black-cat-creations.com/coloring.php

I like the subtle colours myself. I would use the camouflage fabric on the back and just use the panel for the front. I would outline quilt Bambi and add some thread painting inside. I would do a simple crosshatch in the background.

I would get out. The embroidery threads and go over the lines with darker colours.may be necessary to wash thread before using to prevent colour running. Just us bambi picture and then see if they have named the baby. Some new mums like pale colours for a new born life brightens up later.

I like Tartan's idea. Some parents prefer the muted color schemes for baby's room.

That paleness is right in line with the modern look today. Maybe add soft pastels around the edges in pinwheels or some other simple design. Go for elegant, as silly as that sounds for Bambi.

Is it for a boy or girl? Some of the camo fabrics can be colorful.

They are not finding out if it is a boy or a girl but in either case want camo. They are outdoorsy people and want earth tones.
Thanks for all your ideas.
