Need help finding lake house in Virginia
With this cold weather, we are already thinking about next summer and spending some leisure time. Might anyone have a suggestion for a lake area in Virginia where we could rent a house for a few days. My son enjoys fishing and we hope to find a nice place for that. Having a quilt shop nearby wouldn't be a bad thing either.

Smith Mountain Lake is a great area and you shouldn't have any trouble finding a nice rental house or condo. There is a nice quilt shop - The General Store on Scruggs Rd. in Moneta. Also several marinas to rent boats, get fishing licenses, etc. Www.smithmountainlake.com Www.generalstoresml.com. It's about 45 minutes from Roanoke in Sw Virginia. We have a condo and go there fairly often.

I second Smith Mountain Lake (Moneta VA) too as a lovely lake resort area with many vacation rentals. Unfortunately, the quilt shop in the General Store has close their fabric shopping and, I hear, they will only be teaching....not sure how that will work, though.
But you could check out the sweet little Boone Country Store (no personal website) which has a fabric section, sells sandwiches and some homemade edibles, too. They are located on Rt. 116 about 4-5 miles northwest of Burnt Chimney (which is on 122 between Hardy/Westlake and Rocky Mount). The store is almost not visible from the road, on the left, up an incline (gravel road) at a sign you will need to keep an eye open for. Their fabrics are close-out, not necessarily the most current lines, but good prices; also Mettler thread and some notions.
You can google real estate companies for Smith Mountain Lake to find your rentals.

It has been several years since we lived in Charlottesville, VA, but we visited Sherando Lake (I believe it was a State Park) often for day picnics, boating swimming when my DH was in grad school. State Parks usually have rental units. May be a place to start looking.

check out vrbo.com and airbnb.com. Both have rentals offered by owners - so you can rent a condo, house, apartment ... etc. Most come fully stocked (kitchen), some offer housekeeping, many have a local "handy-man" to call upon in case of emergency, some will even offer boats, cars, four-wheelers - etc. Each listing usually has a review from past renters.
Airbnb.com has "rooms" as well as entire units .. "rooms" meaning you will be living with the host. They do have some entire units for rent though.
