Default Foundation piecing - background blocks

My present challenge is a mini version of Grandma's Surprise, which will be on the cover of a hussif I'm designing for myself.

There's a good photo on From the Blue Chair at http://www.fromthebluechair.com/2015/09/precision.html

Mine is having a very similar colours layout, and the nine blocks finish at just over 2" square (the small triangles are about 1/2 x 1/4"). And I'm loving doing it.

Am interested to know your thoughts about piecing the segments. With this layout, some of the wedges are only in the background fabric - my background is all one solid fabric, unlike the example which has several low volume prints.

Would you do the single colour wedges in one piece of fabric? Or would you still go ahead and piece all the triangles in the same fabric? I even wondered about using one piece of fabric and stitching on the piecing lines to give the illusion of patchwork.

And what about the blocks that have only two colours?

Interested as always to hear others' opinions. I think it's great how we all see beauty differently.
Thanks

If it were me I would eliminate any seam I could. Since your doing one solid background fabric I think the extra seaming is not going to be missed visually, but just add work for works sake.

what is a "hussif"?

You sure are working with tiny tiny pieces!

I wondered, too. "In other words a hussif is a basic sewing kit. The word itself is old and simple sewing kits used to be given to soldiers as their “housewife”. Today we would call them sewing kits or craft organizer."

Have you checked pinterest? There are several examples of the quilt shown. Maybe that can help? https://www.pinterest.com/pin/831759...11049/?lp=true
