Default I Followed Your Advice

I read a post not long ago regarding wool pressing mats. One reply said they had bought a wool horse blanket for around $22. So I followed their lead. It took forever to arrive. It smelled like it had already been on the horse, which is not an unpleasant scent but not something you want your gifted quilts smelling of. So, I got to be too late to return it. I put it in the sun for a few days, helped some. Then sprayed it with Febreeze fabric spray and that finally solved the problem. My 2 labs have been very curious about it, probably wondering where the horse is! So, all in all....it worked out and saved me bunches.

I’ve been wondering about the smell. Thanks for posting this. Glad you found a solution.

Funny that it smelled. Mine came straight out of the package and had no smell to it at all.
Glad it worked out.

I got an old US Army wool blanket from Salvation army. Actually DH picked it up. I think he paid a whopping $2 for it. I machine washed and dried it and cut a piece out of it for my ironing board. I still have a lot of that blanket left for replacing.

Yes the wool smells, but the ones you buy for quilting smell too. That is from the wool of the sheep.

I have the horse pad too and unless I steam too much it doesn't smell. If I steam too much it starts to smell like wet wool.....the smell goes away as soon as the pad dries.

A lady brought a quilt with a wool batt to our club. She asked how she could get the smell out. But the rest of us agreed that it smelled like wool. If you've never smelled that before, it is different, but not bad. You get used to it.

100% wool will smell like wool. When wet or heated the smell will be stronger just like it is when it's on a sheep. Smells better then a wet dog.

You must have a very sensitive nose, I know I do. I smell a lot of things my family doesn't smell. When my mat came I let it sit out for a few days and have not noticed any odor since. But just like washing any wool there is that smell, and as Onebyone said, it does smell better than a wet dog.
