I love those. I think I prefer the first one but don't ask me why. lighting I think actually.

What wonderful keepsakes and what a great friend you are for doing them. Just as Iceblossom commented, I really like the block pattern too...is there a name for the block? Great job on both.

Thank you for all the kind comments. The pattern is from MSQC - one I received free with an order, but is still on their site for $4.95. It is called The Ribbon Star.
