I am just wondering if anyone has ever used flannel for binding. I am working on a quilt that has flannel backing and the flannel would be perfect binding - it goes perfect with the quilt top.
I have never used flannel for binding - -- will that work? Has anyone else used flannel for binding?

If it is the same as the backing, it sounds to me as a perfect addition to your quilt.
However, I do have a question that I will throw out here, that's always been in the back of my mind about using flannelette ginding. Honestly, I don't know the answer.
Question ... is flannelette binding more apt to break down or wear out faster than traditional quilting cotton?

It would depend on the quality of flannel.
Chamois type of flannel - like in some of the Eddie Bauer shirts - wears for a long time.
Flimsy, loosely woven flannel - probably would not survive hard use very long.
I think using wider binding (1/2 inch or so finished size) would make it easier to miter the corners.

Agree with you BearIG that wider in a flannelette would miter on the corners better.
Thanks for your thoughts on the flannelette. Have never heard of chamois flannel and don't recall any Eddie Bauer shirts, being from such. Granted I haven't seen any in years, so what do I know!

Thank you for your repolies.. and the tip to make the binding wider. That is probably true

I made this quilt in 2001 - just checked the label - the front, back and binding are all flannel. It lives on my recliner and I pull it over me most winter evenings, so it gets lots of use and washings. There is no sign of wear on the binding. I cut my binding @ 2½ " and the seams were all sewn with ¼ ". I machine quilted mostly in the ditch and added more where needed. HTH
