I make scrappy quilts mostly for donation. I have made myself scrappy quilts and sometimes I have enough scraps left to use for bindings. I save scraps since they cost as much as fabrics used to make a quilt.

As for wear, as long as you use a small stitch connecting them I don't see it as a problem. So far not on mine.

I love scrappy binding on my civil war fabric big quilts and also on my small/wall/doll/mini quilts. I think it adds a lot of visual interest to the quilts.

I haven't done one yet, but I've been saving left over bindings from other projects, so I will have to try it out.
