I guess in my interpretation, a bedspread covers the whole bed and reaches to the floor on three sides with enough extra to cover the pillows at the head of the bed. This quilt started out as a cover for the top of the mattress with a 12 inch drop on three sides but over time and conversations it grew into a bedspread.
