I cant find a pattern for half square triangle ( 2 color ) for a queen size !! Not sure how big to make blocks !! Looking to do the diamond layout or ....

You can make them any size you want. Just think about what size you want your quilt to be. Queen is around 90" X 108." If you wanted to use a layer cake (10" squares), they would make a 9" finished HST. 90" divided by 9" is 10 squares. 108" divided by 9" is 12 squares. So without borders, you would need 9 X 12 = 108 HSTs.

oh wow ....your awesome !! I suck at math ....... i was thinking around 6" blocks ?? Trying to figure the bast cost effective way .... layer cakes , but wouldnt that be alot of waste for a 6" block ??

If you want 6" squares, for that size quilt you would need 270. Don't forget, that is the finished size, so you would need to make 6.5" HSTs. I would cut 7" strips (then squares) from yardage, and try a test block first as you may need to use 7.25" squares.

If I do this sizing , I will only need 1 layer cake ...... So it would be 12 blocks by 10 blocks ?! What is the 9 x 12 you mentioned ?! THANK YOU !

Just to throw another wrinkle into your puzzle--the pattern you linked, uses a constant background. That means that you will either need yardage (the least expensive option) or a plain coloured layer cake. So if one thinks of yardage and 10 inch squares, in a perfect world, you can get 12 from 30 inches and 60 (one square will make 2 blocks) out of 150 inches--that's just over 4 yards.

So, for 120 HST's, you would need only1 1/2 layer cakes but yardage too.

But also, the size 90x108 would be if one wanted a pillow tuck. I make my queens only 90x90. That also means that they can be turned so that all edges will get the same amount of wear.

The 9 X 12 is 9 squares wide by 12 squares long = 108 squares.

So you need 54 print squares and 54 solid squares. There are 40 to 42 10" squares in a layer cake.

If you wanted to add a border, you could make your center 8 squares wide by 10 squares long. Then add a border to make it the size you want. That would be 1 pint layer cake and one solid layer cake.

YES !! I have a few yards of a solid , and I ordered 2 layer cakes ... now to sit on my hands until they arrive !!!!
