    Default An age-old question....

I haven't used pre-cuts in a while. My current quilt that I am making is using 2.5" jelly rolls for part of the block. The jelly rolls I am using, have pinked edges.

The age-old question is: When sewing the 1/4" seam, is it 1/4" from the peak edge or 1/4" from the valley edge of the pre-cut if it has pinked edges?

I would think the different companies cuts would all be different. I'd get out my tape measure to check where you need to sew, and then be consistant, sewing all the same.

Donna Jordan goes from the inside of the pinked edge if that adds to the confusion or clarifies anything! I never pay it any attention and it works for me but I don't do "precision" quilting. It always works out fine, just be consistent.

    That's what I would do.

I have also had the same question.

But the answer to get out the tape measure and measure answers the question well.

I never notice the pink edges. I sew the seam like they aren't there. So far I haven't had a problem with size or matching up.

This - measure to see where the 2 1/2" width actually falls. It could be peaks, it could be valleys. Since the intended finished width (after sewing seams) will be 2", you need to measure to see where your 1/4" seams need to be.

I always measure my jelly rolls, they measure 2 1/2 inches from valley. I don't recall ever having a problem doing it that way.

Vallley! But measuring a couple of the strips in the jelly roll is a good idea just in case the manufacturer was trying to fudge a little or a cutting machine is "off" that day.

Okay, did the measuring and these strips are 2.5" from peak to peak. Doing the sewing - going from peak to peak with 1/4" seams leaves 2 inches. So, peak to peak it is, on these.

Interesting that two measured and 1 was peaks and the other valleys! Guess it depends on company.
