    Default Rag Quilt Square

Before sewing my squares together I’m sewing an X on it first. I am using FF in it. But my squares are now not lined up. I have my stitches are 3.5–3.0. What do I need to do? I am making Halloween treat bags. I have made these yrs ago but have forgotten what I did first.Should I sew the squares together first then quilt the squares before assembling the bag?

Are you using a walking foot? If not, that can shift the top and bottom fabric out of line.

Or perhaps the side you attached the FF to shrank that square a bit?

I always sew the X first. I have had squares be off and after they were ragged they looked fine.

I use the Go rag die. I use the 8 in square for quilts and the smaller square rag die for projects like pillows. I layer the squares sew the X and then cut with the die to rag before sewing. The squares are easy to sew to fit because the rags are very forgiving if I have to fudge some. The rag quilt is my most often requested quilt to make for family young and old. I can have a throw size made using pre cut squares in less in a few hours. When I see flannel layer cakes on sale I buy! great backing for the quilt.
