    Default Matching thread

Driving home from the chiropractor this morning and thinking about having to put the binding on a quilt. For those of us that top stitch a binding, do you match your quilting thread or match the thread to the binding color?

I machine bind using Charismah's flanged binding method. Needle thread matches the flange fabric color, bobbin thread matches quilting on back side of quilt.

I match the binding to make the stitching as invisible as possible.

I match the binding. The majority of the time it works beautifully to hide the hand stitching on my quilts.

Most of the time I match the binding, but once in a while I use the thread that I used for the quilting if matching the binding isn't practical. Something my binding is made up from more than one fabric, or I use a large scale print and the binding ends up with a lot of different colors showing. Those are the times when I match the quilting thread.

One note, because of my method, the bottom thread is on the quilt, not the binding. In all cases, I use bottom thread that will blend in the best with the backing.

I use the automated stitches to decorate my bindings, so I use a contrasting color of thread.

I think there is no "one size fits all". Do some experimenting and see what you like best for each project. I mix it up.
