I am trying to resize a Christmas tree block from 14 to 12 and I am stuck.
The original sizes are:
5.5 + 4.5 + 5.5
4.5+ 6.5 + 4.5
3.5 + 8.5 + 3.5
2.5 + 10.5 + 2.5
Tree trunk
6.5 + 2.5 + 6.5
I tried cutting 2 " from each measurement and ended up with a 9" block. HELP!!!

Assuming the measurements are BG, tree, BG I would make tree pieces 1” smaller and then the BG pieces each 1/2” smaller Perhaps try this with scraps or paper to see how it works out for you. Or if you want a larger tree, make the tree 1/2” smaller and then BG 3/4” smaller

well, thinking about it, this would adjust the width but the length may be smaller. You could add apiece of BG to top or bottom

Here is one that finishes at 12". https://cuddlecatquiltworks.com/blog...ck-12-finished It also has five layers of the tree versus the 4 that you gave. I'm guessing by the measurements that the pattern does have the seam at the tip of the branches. If that is the case, I'm thinking that by making the sides 2 3/4" plus the dimensions given minus 1/2" for the seam allowance will allow you not to have those extra seams at the tips of the branches.

Based on the top and bottom measurements, it looks like this one finishes at 12", also. http://neighborhoodquiltclub.blogspo...orial.html?m=1

I always try my resizing out on graph paper. That way I don't have to do math when I get it the size I want. I just count squares.

Ditto ... graph paper is the way to go!!

Just remember that once you have your design drawn,
that you need to add the seam allowances to the pieces.

The first line is 14" plus 1.5" seam allowances. To make it 12" and proportional, you'd need to make it

4.786 + 3.429 + 4.786

That's because 12/14 = 0.8571 and you need to multiply that by each of the finished piece sizes (5 - 4 - 5) and then add the 0.5" allowances back in to each cut piece.

You won't be able to make it the same proportions easily by scaling the existing block. You'll find it much easier to use that block for inspiration and sketch out a similar 12" block on graph paper, making sure to add 1/2" to each piece for the seam allowances.
