I am working on an Hunter's Star quilt. Each block finishes at 16.5 inches. I'm wanting a queen size quilt. I thought I needed 4x6 blocks, two more to go. yeah, not. I was working on it with my sewing group and a friend calculated I need about 35 blocks. Please tell me she's wrong, I'm running out of steam on this one. LOL.

are you putting sashing between the blocks and putting borders on the quilt?

You need to decide the measurments of the quilt you want. Measure the top of your bed, and add the drop want on the sides and bottom. 4 blocks wide is 66" and 6 blocks long is 99". If you are adding borders, add them on to these measurements. Example 8" borders would make the quilt 82" x 115".

    4 X 6 layout would make your top 64" X 96"

    5 X 7 would make your top 80" X 112"

Put what you have on the bed and see what you think.

bj has the right idea. put it on the top and then decide if you want to make more block or add a boarder or sashing. there are a thousand ways to make the queen size quilt with out taking the pattern all the way to the boarder.

here is a hunter star that I made. I used a boarder to help frame it out and then did the binding in a different fabric. just a thought

Will lay it on a bed, later. Mine looks nothing like the one sahm 4605 posted. Mine uses (2) 4.5 inch blocks & (8) 2.5 inch HST's. I think I like the star all one colour. Mined is different purples ie 4 light & 4 dark. Gotta post a picture soon.

if you only use 24 block the 4 across will equal 64", you would need some pretty good size borders to make it a queen.maybe a 5x6 (30 blocks) would get you closer to the size you want with a border around.
