I was raised in a small town and our JC Penneys had fabric at least until I left home, but that was in 1972. Yes, 40 years ago (argh)! It was at one time the only place in town that sold fabric, that I remember anyway.

Back when I was a child in the 50s/60s -- almost every store sold fabric. Sears, Penney's, TG&Y, Woolworth's, Kress's, Ben Franklin ... They had the big cutting tables with the measuring machine the fabric ran through. When the gauge showed the length of fabric you wanted they pushed a blade foward that put a slice in the fabric and then they hand-ripped that baby! I can still remember the zip sound of the fabric as it ripped apart. Those were the days, my friend.

I remember going with my grandmother to Penny's in North Portland to buy fabric in the 50's.

Then the clerk would cut or tear across the fabric from the point of that little cut. Wish stores still had those today.
The Joann's in my town DOES have one of those machines! They seem to only use it for Home Dec fabrics, though.

Check out Bonnie Hunter's quips and quotes. http://quiltville.blogspot.com/searc...+river+gingham
I wonder if you have gotten a piece of Dan River Gingham.

I remember Pennys selling fabric. I would say late 70's early 80's is when they quit selling fabric. My guess the material you have is a poly-cotton, as that was the fabric of choice back then.

Thank you posting that link to Bonnie Hunter's article - that was very interesting! I didn't see anything in those quilts that looked exactly like my piece, but I doubt there's any way to know for sure. Love that stuff.
