Our beloved principal is retiring. A co-worker and I would like to make her a quilt, but our skills are pretty primitive. Our school colors are red and white, but a bit of black doesn't hurt. We're considering reds and whites in a turning 12 pattern for the top.

Here's a turning 20 quilt - ours would be a large lap size (right?) (turning 20 uses 20 fat quarters; turning 12 uses 12 of them)

http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-95368-1.htm

We'd use a red print backing and add a quilt label in solid red with an embroidered school mascot - the local embroidery store can do that - her name - the year - and "from your Northside Elementary family".

We've found this for the fabric - would buy either 2 or three bundles to have more of the reds and fewer of the whites. (We'd only charge the other teachers for the FQ's we actually used - we're building stash! Our color is a true red - does this look darker - more brown/red?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=320679141372

Would like to get the backing from our local quilt shop - they didn't have what we needed for the top. We're asking a retired teacher to long arm quilt it.

I think this quilt could cost a total of around $200. Any idea at this point how far off we are? The other teachers will chip in to pay for it, but they'll be astounded that it cost that much - that's considering $75 for material and estimating $50 for embroidery and maybe $80 - $100 for the quilting?

If any of this sounds like it will not work, please tell me now! We need to get started on this if we're going to do it.

Jan, I checked the ebay listing and they don't like like true reds to me. More like brown-red.

Thanks so much! That thought flitted through my mind, but I was hoping I was wrong. You've saved me wasting time and money. I feel like I need a bundle in order for them to coordinate, but the ones with "red" in the title tend to be Christmas.

What else can I do (from my small town with limited shopping possibilities) to get 12 FQ's that coordinate. Aren't reds hard to match?

The civil war reds are not true reds. You might be disappointed if you are set on using a true red.

Can't sleep. Incredibly bored lol. Hubby is away. Are you looking for civil war fabrics? I found these red and whites that I thought were pretty. I have never ordered from them so I can't vouch on quality or anything.

But there is 12 lol

Here is 10. Kind of hard to tell what you are getting with the picture taken like that

Okay - those may be more what I wanted. Didn't know from nothin' about Civil War fabrics - that's just what I found when I typed in "red white fat quarter bundle". These look much more like what we had in mind.

Sorry you're bored, but ... thanks!

me too - can't really tell what's in the other set. Now - for Turning 12 you need 12 fat quarters. Hate to buy two sets - but would have to use as is with this set. Also need backing, but could probably find something to match since there are so many different fabrics in there.

Not done yet - but certainly closer!

Hey - doesn't the last one of these look like one of the CLotilde ones? Maybe I could get some safety FQ's with these? The fifth from the left is the same, isn't it.

Jan, I checked that other ebay listing and they look great! :D
I doubt that a lap quilt would cost 200.00, unless it's custom quilted???
Just my ramblings this late hour :) lol
