The first problem was that the fabric ruffled some. I had to pull from the back to keep it straight.

The second is when I went to construct my border I had to tack down some of my nine patch edges. They were coming apart. Is it the walking foot or just the tendency of a nine patch?

If your fabric 'ruffles' I'd say your walking foot isn't walking. Do you have it installed correctly? Don't forget that there is a bar that either goes over or around the needle clamp. This is what makes it 'walk'.

Also, with the stitching coming apart on your 9 patch edge--you either have the stitch length to long or you are putting to much pressure on the seam and the stitches are pulling apart.

and depending on your machine, you might need to relax your tension a bit!

Ditto on the tension - also can you alter your foot pressure? On my machine, for regular piecing, foot pressure is up to 3 but I lower it to 2 or thereabouts (depending on wadding thickness) when using a walking foot. :-D

yes, that is what I was thinking too...I have to lessen the presser tension too...not all machines can do this, but it might help!
