I am currently making this quilt for an acquaintence who has breast cancer, stage 4. These are her favorite colors and she loves birds and roses. I think I have everything covered. Smiles.
I am making the Courthouse Steps pattern. I don't care for the way the last strips are doubled where the squares come together so am considering adding sashing. I have 2 choices in my stash. I could use either one of them for all the sashing, or I could use one to sash the green sides and the other to sash the blue sides, and add cornerstones where they come together.
I have photos to give you a general idea of how each would look. I kind of like all 3 options, lol, so I can't decide.

no sashing

I'm not sure I care for either sashing now that I see them on screen. I think they are the best I have in my stash but perhaps another looksee would be in order.
I'm thinking I need something definitely still in the green family to go with the greens, and something in the blues with the blues. And then perhaps going with the dark rose in the cornerstones.
These fabric choices break up the sub pattern of the sections coming together from neighboring blocks.

If you must have a sashing, I would go with the 3 color. That seems to be the least distracting, but I also like no sashing. The birds in the centers need to be the focal point, and the choice of the lighter sashings distract from the birds.

My honest opinion? I would have used the green alternating with the blue. Of course that would involve frog stitching........

The last log added on each block makes its own 'sashing' when the blocks are turned as you have them in picture one.
Other sashings with prints detract from the birds.

First, What a wonderful thing to do for an acquaintence!
Second, Love the blocks!
Last, (IMHO) I woouldn't put any sashing.
Maybe when the blocks are sewn together I might add a border (on the sides of quilt only) some of the dark blue floral print.
Would kind of "frame it".

(I don't explain things well so pic shows kind what I mean)

I don't care for the double up sashing. You are correct. I makes it look like floating rectangels. I don't care for the pink and green one either. When things are closer to you in perspective, they are lighter (closer to the "light" supply). Those lighter color strips seem to float or jump out at you compared to the others. I would look for darker colors, similar to the others in the intensity (light or dark) of the hue (color). The busy one is discracting. I would go with a subtle, tone on tone that is similar to the others. Or...maybe a solid, if you found the right color. Maybe consult a color wheel and look for analgous, compliment or cross compliment colors. Your focus seems to be the lovely bird centers. You don't want to distract from that.
