Ten years ago today my 17 year old daughter was supposed to have her first day of classes at New York University. Instead she was there in New York City for the day that changed the lives of so many people. A few hours ago she posted this on her facebook page:
Ten years ago, a stranger let me borrow his phone so I could tell my mom I was ok. Ten years ago, I was surrounded by other kids who all felt scared and small like me. Ten years ago, I saw thousands rise up and help each other. Ten years ago, I wrote in my journal, "I'm amazed by how strong everyone is. Does New York make people this strong? Does tragedy make people this strong?" Ten years ago, my heart broke and healed itself in 24 hours. Ten years ago, I knew I was home. Here. In New York.

I spent the day in my classroom and the classrooms of other teachers doing just what I had planned. I refused to let a few people take control of my life through terror. They changed my life, but they could not then, nor can they now, control me.

I hope as you have gone through this weekend, you have paused for a moment to remember those no longer with us, and to silently thank all those who were there to help and are still helping when tragedy strikes, no matter the form.

I did not see this last weekend but I wanted to say how much I admire your DD & her courage to face this tragedy 10 yrs ago. She faced this terror by staying put & not letting terror control her. This made her one of our country's heros in my eyes. Tell her thanks!
