Default Double Wedding Ring Hints

I've been asked to help a friend with her DWR block. She is a new quilter and pieces all by hand (the thought gives me hives.) I haven't seen the block yet, but she says it isn't laying flat. Do the curves get clipped like in clothing construction? I've never tried making this pattern so I'm lost.
any hints that I can pass on to her would be great. She is working from a book and doesn't seem afraid to tackle the big projects.
thanks for any help

I would be hesitant to clip seams if you are hand sewing. In garment construction, you clip to the machine sewed seam which anchors everything. With hand piecing, I'm not sure there's enough stablization... If it's not laying flat, she may need to take a deeper seam.
Curious to see what others say.

I have used very light fusible interfacing (one side fusible) and drawing the DWR arch and then using this like paper piecing makes it easy. You will then need to Applique (machine stitch) this ring to the main background. Hope this helps.

I found this online:

Looks like you can download a free PDF with complete instructions (including how to trim those arcs!).

Thanks for the link, Prism99. That quilt is now on my "bucket list". Maybe I shouldn't thank you since my list is very, very long. lol

Many years ago I made double wedding rings using the Mary Ellen Hopkins technique...a nightmare really...you pieced the arcs and added them to the centers, and the quilt looked like "swiss cheese" until you added in the square corners. Somehow they did work out, but I know there are easier ways to do them now. I never clipped any of the curves.

You don't need to clip the curves - if the pieces are cut accurately and an accurate 1/4 seam allowance taken then the pieces will lay flat. This is a very ambitious project for a new quilter! She might want to try a few easier blocks until she gets the hang of it.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll know more after I see it tomorrow. There is o stopping her. Her first quilt was a queen sized (all done by hand and cut out with scissors). Tha is for the tips about not clipping the curves

To make your templates take a dbl wedding ring pattern and tape your small pieces together for the arks then cut them out of plastic.<o></o>3.It is still the easiest way to make a top.
