Never Done A Quilt, Now I'm Trying One - Need Help!
Hi there, I have never made a quilt, but, for several years now I have been collecting 4"X4" quilting squares from all over. I am getting ready to make a Queen Sized quilt for my bed and was wondering how many 4"X4" pre-cut squares I will need to complete this quilt. I am going for a 90"X90" or an 80"X80" sized one and need this information. Also, I am hand sewing it and hand tying it. I really wanted to challenge myself as I now have some down time to do this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Wolfkat, first of all welcome to the board and the wonderful and sometimes crazy world of quilting. Now, to answer your question. If you are planning to sew these with the usual 1/4 seam allowance then you would need 25 squares across by 25 down. That would make a total of 625 squares. That should get you your 90x90 measurement. This total is just squares. The total would be less if you are planning on adding borders. Hope this helps and good luck. by my calculations for a 90 x 90 using 4in cut squares (3.5 finished) , you would need about 662 squares. that's 90 / 3.5 = 25.71 and 25.71 x 25.71 = 661.11
80 x 80 would be 80 / 3.5 = 22.85 and 22.85 x 22.85 = 522.12 squaares.

Actually, you've almost answered your own question. If you know the width of your quilt -- 90" -- and the size of your finished blocks -- 3.5" (you will lose 1/2" with your 1/4" seam allowance on opposite sides of each block) -- the you can just divide 90" by 3.5" and come up with 25.71 blocks, OR 25 blocks for convenience.
You will need 25 blocks across and 25 blocks down (same measurement both directions because the quilt is square) so you will multiply 25 x 25 for a total of 625 4" squares/blocks you will need.
This is a wonderful undertaking you are planning, hand-piecing can be time-consuming but beautiful! I hope you will continue here on the quilting board and share your project when you are finished.
By the way, there is a very well-known and highly awarded quilter by the name of Jinny Beyer who hand pieces and hand quilts everything she does; she has a web site and videos you might be checking out.

Hi! As others have explained, your quilt will require 625 squares set 25 across by 25 down. I would like to suggest you piece in groups of 25 squares, 5 across by 5 down. Make enough of these (25) to assemble into the big quilt. This should make a nice project for hand sewing, not too unwieldy. Good luck.

Thank you to everyone who answered my question. I have always wanted to do a quilt because I like to be very creative. I started reading about different quilts I could make and I just always knew I wanted to do a patchwork one. I really like patchwork quilts because they remind me of the ones made back in the olden days. I also like them because you really do not have to take the time to figure out any type of color scheme, you can just do what best expresses you. I know a queen sized quilt is a huge project to take on, but, hey I always say go big or go home. LOL! I will let you all know my progress. Happy quilting to all.
