Hi There!
Hi! I've been lurking on this board for several months and finally decided to introduce myself. I live in Birmingham, AL and just started my sewing hobby about a year and a half ago. My husband and I have three grandchildren: A girl and a boy, both about to turn four; and a little boy that was just born last October. We also have four dogs: A crazy but lovable German Shepard male, a sweet retriever female, an older mixed breed female and a sixteen year old Yorkie female that is spoiled rotten. All four were adopted from shelters or rescues, most as adults (the Yorkie was 13 when we got her). I work full time and my husband travels extensively for his job. When I'm home I'm usually doing something with the dogs or sewing and when he's home he's usually working on one of his vintage BMW motorcycles.
I picked up a few basics in sewing and embroidery from my mother growing up. She was (and is) a master seamstress who can sew pretty much anything, although quilting takes up most of her sewing time. My primary interest when I was younger was embroidery and hand needlework. Over the years I delved into various different crafts - pottery, ceramics, jewelry-making, etc. Eventually life intervened and I put crafting aside. In November of 2012 my husband, who obviously knows me much better than I know myself, got me a Singer sewing machine for my birthday. In the ten years we've been together I had NEVER expressed any interest whatsoever in sewing, but he decided I wanted a machine. As it turns out, he was right! I have been sewing nonstop ever since. The day after getting the machine I got an assortment of beginner sewing books and got a ton of fabric, patterns and supplies at the local JoAnn's and Hancock Fabrics and "went to town"!
My sister - to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude - then told me about the Craftsy website. I have since become a Craftsy addict and have taken tons of classes (and have gotten another ton that I haven't had time to go through yet). My original interest was sewing clothing and craft items for our grandchildren. After a few months of that my sister talked me into taking a quilting class online. I haven't done anything but quilting since!! I've gotten tons of books, patterns and photos and have spent an enormous amount of time surfing the web to learn new things and find out everything I could about different techniques, gadgets and machines. My current favorite place to surf is this board. I have learned SO MUCH from the knowledgeable and helpful people here!
Since my first Singer, I upgraded to a better Singer that also did a great job. When I found that it wasn't very happy doing FMQ though, I got a great deal on a Juki 2010Q and absolutely LOVE it. I have gotten so immersed that I'm now looking at longarms. My husband and I just returned from a quilt show where we tried out several. I'll be posting a few questions about longarms on the Main board here.
Anyway, I'm glad I finally took the plunge and said hello. I'm looking forward to participating in some of this board's very interesting topics!
