Hi, Quilting Board Friend, Hope that your day is going great.
I want to make some throw quilts and was wondering what would be a good size for them. Some of them are for kids, adult woman and tall men.One of my lady friends for church is over 6 foot tall and so is her husband. They always love to set in their recliners at night and watch TV. The kids range from per-school up to 5th grade and then there are the teachers who are very tall.

I also plan on making some for our church bazaar. I am open open to ideas for throws as well. I need ideas also to use as leaders and enders so that I can make more than one at a time.

Me? My brain and my preferred project size is queen sized. I seem to be incapable of doing anything much smaller than 36" on it's shortest side and it is with a lot of difficulty that I can get a top to fit on a single width of fabric. Last year I did make two preemie tops just to prove I could. So typically for a "small" project I end up around 4 x 5'+. I want them big enough to wrap around shoulders, arm tip to arm tip is around 6'+ on an average person.

In these days of rulers and such, some of the old school things I do get giggles from people. But almost all of us have a good 1 yard measurement from the tip of your nose to somewhere on your hand, maybe the farthest pointy finger maybe less. Grab a tape measure and practice it and find where your sweet spot is. Comes in handy when confronted by a big piece of fabric at the thrift store... Also good to know that most of those big basic square floor tiles in stores are 12".

I like my throw around 48" x 60". This way I can snuggle up on a chair or the floor to watch tv or cuddle with someone (DH) in front of the fireplace if I choose or take to the beach for an intimate picnic. Big enough but not to large.

Children’s throws I like to make about 42X50 because I can use regular width fabric for backing. If the adult are 6 feet, you will probably want to make them about 42X80.

Fabric Galore

My late husband and my grandsons are well over 6' tall. Needless to say I made their throws at least 72" long. My granddaughters and daughters throws are about 60" long. I tend to make everything close to 48" wide and that's a good size for lying on the couch or sitting in a chair. Good luck and I'm sure the children's throws only need to be about 48-50" long.

I like to make lap throws about 52-60" wide and about 60-64" long---we are fairly big people!

Where I work, we make them bigger. 45" X 60" is a crib size. 50" X 60" is a lap size and 60" X 72" is a throw size. The throw for a tall person could be up to 60" X 90". Think Minky -- it's 60" wide.

I shoot for my throws to be about 60 by 72. That size makes them easier to use and fold quickly.

I like 6' long for adults and usually go with 52-54" wide depending on the width of the fleece I use for backing. I really like fleece on the back of throws - it is snuggly and doesn't slide off when you are napping.

I am like Iceblossom liking to make most of mine queen size. That being said I have made my grandkids 60x80 like our quilts of valor. They way they will still be able to use them as they grow. At church our prayer quilts are width of fabric by 54 if that gives you an idea. Personally I find them too short to cover my shoulders and feet at the same time and I’m about 5’4”.
