Default Needle won’t disengage when winding bobbin

Hi all, I’m new to sewing and have an older Singer Merritt 9444. I was sewing just fine for a while and went to wind another bobbin when I noticed I can no longer get the needle to stop moving when winding. The wheel has one of the inner wheels that u press in at an angle to stop the needle from moving, which worked earlier today but has no effect now. Any tips?

Welcome to the QB from SE Michigan. I have recently experience this same problem and it turned out I need a new gasket for the bobbin winder in the machine. It is just worn down so the needle will engage when ever the gasket whirls by. If you can loosen the wheel some more that could help too especially on some of the older models. Again welcome to the QB.

I had the same problem with a 30 year old Pfaff, don't know what the issue was but my sewing repair tech fixed it right up.

I had an older Singer with that problem. I got it out after many years of storage and cleaned and oiled it. It ran like a top except for the problem you described. I went to the website Vintage Singers and asked for advice. Got good information there. They suggested the linkage around the fly wheel needed cleaning, lubrication. Suggest you check out this website with your specific question. There is lots of knowledge there.
