I am trying to release the wheel to wind a bobbin. this machine hasn't been used in perhaps thirty-five years and I can't get the screw to move. can I used WD40 to loosen it? I am lucky this machine came with four bobbins! I know it needs to be cleaned and I am approaching it carefully as I have no money to have it done professionally. It was a gift and I was told it formerly belonged to a tailor before its immediate past life as a decorative item in a window.

First of all welcome to the QB from SE Michigan! Only use sewing machine oil on your machine. On the Hand wheel and even on the bobbin winder. If this machine has sit for 35 yrs. It will be time to oil the entire machine and all the little open circles on the machine. IF you have the manual it will tell you where all those points are. The hand wheel is one of those points. The little screw if for taking the hand wheel off the machine and something you don't want to play with if you are not taking the machine apart .You may be able to find the manual online if you do not have one. A good oiling should do the trick.

Thank you for your welcome! After reading it I took a good look at the mechanism, actually found a site with the manual and could read it on line. Somebody at some time removed what is called the rear cover plate so there is no thread guide for the bobbin winder. And then they replaced the spool holder and base backwards so the oiling holes don't line up with the body of the machine! I changed it around and ordered some oil online and can hardly wait for it to come.In the meanwhile, I can't find a rear cover plate online without buying a whole new machine (it's a 1917 rotary in its famous twiggy cabinet). So my question today, for everyone and anyone who may read this is: do the electric Simplicity bobbin winders work with these old bobbinsz? Thanks a million times over.

I'm unsure what what you mean by "rear cover plate."

You say it is a rotary which would have round bobbins. And those will work on the Sidewinder, even though they have a larger center than modern bobbins. I even wound my Junker & Ruh bobbin, which is like a Wheeler and Wilson 9 bobbin. If it is a long shuttle White, than no you can't wind it on a Sidewinder. If you have the round bobbin and try to wind it on the Sidewinder, I would suggest that you use a thin spool pin felt.

Thank you. I ordered a sidewinder off that horrid site that CV19 has made my go to shopping destination. I do have round bobbins and I noticed that some of the sidewinders come with slip ons for the bobbin spool to adjust to different hole sizes. Not sure if the one I ordered does, we shall see. In the meantime, I will continue to scour the internet for my missing part. I figure sooner or later one will show up.
