Unhappy 306K not coming up to speed

Recently my machine stopped running it looked like it was because of the belt so I replaced it with a leather belt which was said to be OEM. What I find now is I can't get the belt tight enough to stop it from slipping so it won't go fast. I followed the video about running the machine at full speed and raising and lowering the motor but that doesn't seem to work. Either the belt slips at the motor end or it's really slow there seems to be no happy medium.

Have you done any maintenance recently such that there could be some oil on the belt or the belt channel?
What were the symptoms when it stopped running? Does the motor spin freely with no belt on it (if you test this don't let it run at full throttle with no resistance)?

I haven't done any oiling recently except in the machine itself nowhere near the belt. Motor runs at full speed without a belt on it.

If it's slipping at the motor that may be because the machine is catching somewhere. Does the machine spin freely via the handwheel without the belt on it?

Welcome. I do not think any Singer electric machines had a leather belt. According to my parts list and what I have on my 306, It should be a V-belt, part #198651. According to https://www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/belts_for_sale/ it is 15 1/8" around. It looks like some places are saying that it comparable to some longer belts for other machines. It seems like on the 319, we changed the belt that was on the machine, as it was the wrong length. Unfortunately, Sew-Classic is no longer in business. She was a good source for vintage machine parts and associated information. She was also willing to answer questions.
