Default Singer 115 thread take up spring

I am rebuilding/repairing a Singer 115 treadle machine, 1921 vintage. Can anyone walk me through how to install a new thread take up spring ? the old one seemed to be jammed into the bottom, not fitting in a notch or slot. Thanks for any information. The head is coming along nicely but the cabinet / wood is pretty well shot. Treadle is very good, quite the project but with a hand crank it runs like a watch so I have hope for a complete recovery.

Can you post a picture of what you have? Information I am reading on a 115 says it was a replacement for the 9W. I don't have a 115 to look at but I do have a 9W, if the the parts are the same or similar.

Our friends at the Featherweight shop have a handy tutorial for tension assemblies: Early Tension Unit
