Singer 401 top hat cam pop out
I recently purchased a Singer 401 with some top hat cams. The primary embroidery stitches made with the machine's built in cams work fine. I tried playing with some of the specialty top hat stitches, but the top hat cam pops out of the machine after a few stitches even though I had pushed it in until it clicked into place. I had the righthand dial set to "specialty", but I'm not sure what the lefthand dial should be set on. Does it matter what the red lever is set on? I couldn't find recommended settings for the lefthand dial or red lever in the user manual when using the top hats. I had the machine professionally serviced so I'm guessing the problem is probably me and not the machine. Any ideas on what might cause the top hats to jump out of the machine? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

There is a stitch pattern chart under the lid of the cam door. It can be a bit overwhelming, but that gives you the settings. The manual tells what setting the machine should be in to install or remove cams.

Are you using a hard copy or pdf of the manual? It looks like the left side would be at A, B or C. The red lever in the middle. It says to move the right hand pointer off Special and appears to be set at R. It is on the page after "Primary Pattern" "Special Discs" page that shows the five interchangeable discs classified as primary patterns. That is in the pdf that I probably got from singer.com. I actually have a couple of pdfs one from 1958 and the other revised 1976. Probably somewhere between page 30 to 35 of a hard copy manual
