I made a quilt for my brother in law and his son and gave it to them over the weekend. My goal is to make everyone in my family a quilt - anyway, he promptly asked "how do I wash it?". I mean I have given a lot of quilts to my family members and no one has asked how to take care of it. Made me laugh but I told him wash, dry, use and enjoy!

That was great. He cared. I would have said not to wash in hot water but otherwise, just as you said.

Just in case, I'd tell him not to hang it on the line to dry because stitches will pop, and don't use bleach. He obviously wants to take good care of the quilt.

Most all my quilts are gifts to others, I have yet to make a quilt for my own beds to date. I've been giving a couple "color catchers" with instructions how to use them with every quilt so they should have no problems when they go to wash them. For those quilts that are queen size and their machines are not large enough to handle them, I've offered to wash them at least once for them. This way I also know if there is a problem with colors bleeding as I don't wash my fabrics but I do starch them so bleeding will occur then and I can take care of the problem.

No one how ever asked me how to wash a quilt. My SIL use to wash them as she would sheets. Meaning every week. She has several and mostly don't use but one.

I made the mistake of not telling people how to care for their quilts and received them back for major repairs. Of course cold water always and if your machine is not large enough for it take it to the laundry mat and wash it. I have one quilt that I have dry cleaned too, that one stays with me. Now I tell everyone or put washing instructions in the box with the gift. Or even pin the instructions to the quilt.

I launder Every quilt I make as the final step to completion after binding. Then, on the label I put care instructions. I include the statement they only need to be laundered once or twice a year- treat like a comforter.
