I am making kids quilts that will mainly be fleece tops (one and one half yard cuts by 60 inch width) with either polyester or cottong backings with batting in between and they will be tied......

do I need to prewash the fleece?

Not for shrinkage or fading, but I like to prewash everything because of all the chemicals used in the processing and transporting (especially if it was fumigated with pesticides when it was imported)

I would give it a wash when you are done, but not necessary for shrinking. I haven't noticed the colors running either, so you should be fine.

Hi! I am brand new to this board, but I too am making fleece blankets. Most of them are two sides of polar fleece with polyester batting in the middle. My family loved them so much that I took some unfinished quilt tops and added batting and backed them with fleece, then tied them. Everyone loves them because they are so warm and snuggly. Not traditional, but enjoyed. Sorry to ramble. I haven't prewashed the fleece, but the ones I have washed came out great. Happy Day!

What do you mean about fumigating for importing? I've never heard of this, and it's a really scary thought.

Thanks Loretta. I will definitely prewash the ones to be done and wash the ones I have made. Thanks again.

All textiles (and other organic materials like wood, including packing cases) are fumigated when they are exported from other countries and/or imported into the Unites States - fabric, clothing, rugs, etc.

Doing a quick google search, I found this:

when you say that you tie the fleece, is it the blanket that you fringe on the ends and then tie? or are you tieing it through out the blanket since it has batting? jeanette
