Yes that will work and how do I know? I took a piece of graph paper, cut it to the 1 and 3/4 measurement and another piece at 1 and 1/4 and sewed them together at the machine for 2 and 1/2.

Great tip. Thinking if you want the piping look, these measurements might work also, just fold the opposite way.

I have done it both ways. If you use the wider fabric of some coordinating fabric, then let it show as a flange. Black, red, white and such works well here.
But if you have enough of the good fabric to make that 1 1/2 inch, then the 1 1/4 piece can be any trash fabric. It won't show.

You are full of wonderful tips Tartan! I appreciate your help. I was going to do a test with fabric today but your graph paper test was a better way go.
